Born in India, Avi Mehta moved to New Jersey at the age of 10. He quickly developed a passion for sports, but soon realized that playing sports professionally was not going to be feasible. He wondered what career path would allow him to still do something with his passion for sports. Fast forward to now, Avi is now the Director of Strategic Communications with Texas A&M - Commerce Athletics. The Lions recently made the official announcement that they will be moving from Division II to the Division I Southland Conference, which will change the entire look of the athletic communications office. In October’s Through My Lens series, CoSIDA intern Brandon Jones discusses the challenges and opportunities that becoming a Division I program brings as well as some background information on Avi and his advice to young professionals in Sports Information.

ON-DEMAND WEBINAR presented by Capital One CANSIDA (Canadian SIDs): Event Efficiencies Original Date: Thursday, April 22, 2021 Presenter Elisa Mitton (University of Windsor) guided a conversation and Q&A on strategies to best coordinates game day communications, social media and photographers, event staff and logistics, webcasting and volunteers. Mitton focused on using productivity, planning and communications tools like online schedules, Slack and in-person communications and site visits to ensure that you cover all your event to-do lists. Additionally, she and the audience spoke about the importance of crisis planning and the ability to pivot with unforeseen circumstances that might arise.

Podcast with Dave Sanderson (International speaker, author and noted authority on personal leadership) with host Trip Durham, 2D Consulting, LLC One moment in recent history – 12 years ago - which captured international attention was when US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing in the Hudson River, outside of New York City. This bravery and life-saving techniques of flight captain Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III were chronicled as the Miracle on the Hudson, when a bird strike hit Flight 1549, leaving no choice but for the crew but to ditch and land the plane into the Hudson River. One passenger on that January 15, 2009 flight was today’s podcast guest – Dave Sanderson, a businessman who was flying from LaGuardia International to Charlotte, NC. Sanderson was one of the last off the plane after assisting other passengers to exit on the wings of that plane. Sanderson had to jump into the frigid waters of the Hudson as there was no more room on the wing. Sanderson joins June Stewart Leadership Series podcast host Trip Durham to discuss that day, his unique story, and the leadership and personal growth experiences that came about after the incident. Now a motivational speaker, noted authority on personal leadership, TEDx speaker and author, Sanderson’s book Moment's Matter details his close encounter with death and how one defining moment can create a lifetime of purpose. Sanderson directs his comments to our athletic communications professionals and how we all can best move through the challenges brought on by the pandemic, build consensus and rapport in their work environment, and much more. As he states, “Right now it’s about employing your personal leadership to show people how to give certainty to those who may have uncertainty.”
