Being frank and honest and expressing opinions that may be controversial on your podcast creates interest and attention around your topic and your podcast. People love to talk about subjects they are interested in and will often happily appear as a guest on your podcast if you tap into their passion. Somebody recently declined to guest on Pilar’s 21st Century Work Life  podcast because she saw Pilar as a competitor. Microphone headsets are a good solution for people who are not used to speaking into microphones. The microphone always stays at a fixed distance from the mouth and they allow co-hosts to ‘forget the tech’ and concentrate on the content of the podcast. Craig: Some podcasters speak about themselves too much in the beginning, especially when they have an informational ‘how to’ podcast. Pilar: If you’re doing a self-development podcast, the natural thing to do would be to put yourself out there and share personal stuff with the audience. We should be aware of the effect of what we say on our podcasts, especially when talking about sensitive issues like politics. (And the story of how Pilar lost a listener...) Perhaps there is a gap in the market for a seasoned professional independent journalist to start a podcast. The news is not being researched as well as it used to be. There isn’t enough money in many organisations for good, well-researched journalism. (The book Pilar was trying to remember was Flat Earth News.) It’s not as strong as in the UK, for example. Radio was tightly controlled by the state in Franco’s day. Craig: Are most podcasters producing podcasts for other podcasters? Perhaps this is one reason why podcasting isn’t opening up very fast. The top shows in itunes seem to be re-purposed Spanish radio shows. Pilar: Brand awareness sends a strong message when it comes to the podcasts listeners choose to listen to. Craig: Many people still don’t know what a podcast is and where to find them. In itunes, listeners are choosing popular branded podcasts from sources they know. Pilar: Emilcar, Sunne, Joss and others are showing good vision in forming podcast networks. This helps the credibility of podcasts in the network. There is still a divide and a fear of tech for women. It’s a generational thing. Craig: The tech doesn’t need to be a barrier for women anymore. Perhaps in 3 or 4 years, the split between men and women in podcasting will be similar to that of TV and radio. Pilar: What’s the gender split in producing radio and TV? Salvi started with a personal podcast, Ladrando en La Nube, which is quite a vulnerable thing to do. People would listen to Salvi’s podcast because they like Salvi, not because they especially wanted to inform themselves about a particular topic. Craig: Isaac rightly says that it’s crucially important to be constantly improving delivery on the mic in areas like phrasing, projection, intonation, engagement, the use of silence, etc. The Real Brian has also been emphasising this on his Profitcast podcast (which has now finished): http://www.profitcastuniverse.com/podcast-episodes/  Pilar: Podcasters should focus on mic technique, structured communication and understanding the medium in which you are operating. Isaac follows a concise script for his podcasts and maximises communication with his audience. A podcaster needs to find his/her voice and decide what kind of message and connection he/she wants to deliver. How intimate do you want to be with your audience? How much of your (personal) life do you want to talk about? How much of my opinion do I want to share with others? How many podcasting ‘rules’ do you want to break? Craig: Before you break the rules (in podcasting, music, art etc) you have to learn them and know what they are. Podcasting with co-hosts has helped improve delivery and find a voice. Pilar: When you podcast with a co-host, you start to find out what kind of podcaster you are. Craig: The length of podcast episodes is a subjective thing. Longer podcasts can be paused and continued later. A podcast can’t be too long, but it can be too boring. One of the most downloaded podcasts on the libsyn platform is Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History which can be 3 or 4 hours long. His podcast once received over 350,000 downloads in a 24-hour period on May 6, 2015: http://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/  Pilar: Length is part of format and length depends of what you are trying to communicate to your audience. Craig: It’s wonderful that JPod is still a free conference that promotes podcasting and education in and around the podcasting field. As Isaac said, this will probably change in the coming years and money will become more of a focus for podcasters. Pilar: Hopefully, there will be a wide spectrum and not two separate camps of monetize or not monetize. Craig: There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make a living from podcasting. Pilar: We don’t all have to be entrepreneurs. If you’re going to do anything for free, let people know! Free also has value and this shouldn’t be understated. Craig: It’s wonderful that Jpod is free for podcasters. Pilar: If JPod stops being free, it probably will lose attendees who are podcast listeners/fans. Craig and Pilar were curious about what was going on with podcasting in Spain. So they've set up a podcast to give them an excuse to talk to podcasters in Spain. In the first part of the show, we interview podcasters in Spanish. During the second part, we talk in English about what we have learned.
