Chris Kay Fraser is a writing coach and founder of Firefly Creative Writing, a small business whose mission is to help people reconnect to the joy and power of writing. She holds a B.A. in History and an M.Ed in Adult Education and Community Development. She has devoted her life to walking with others to the authentic, raw and delightful places words can reach. She lives with her partner Ian, her dog Marshall and many books. Firefly Creative Writing is a small-but-mighty team of writing coaches and support staff based in Toronto, and available internationally to help writers melt their blocks, understand their unique, perfect processes and pull their dreams down onto the page. Also on the program we have author Sharon Neiss-Arbess, who just wrote the motivational book Get Up, with David Newton and published by Lisa Borden. After working as a copywriter in the advertising industry, Sharon decided that it was time for a particular story to leave her mind and land instead on the blank pages in front of her. Her novel Me And My So-Called Friends was written over a nine-month period in a local Toronto coffee shop. A favourite among the middle school crowd? including the parental units as well, Me and My So-Called Friends stirred up many crucial conversations, which lead to producing a teache?s manual called Brave The Waves - A Program for Building Resiliency. Get Up is Sharo?s second book that contains a collection of short stories that explores unforgettable life lessons. Each tale is perfectly paired by a physical exercise followed by a few words of advice from a collection of mentors that have made an impact on our world. Sharon also writes blogs. She writes self-care tips, and she even writes insanely simple recipes. What does she do when she is not tip-tapping on her keyboard? She loves eating her own homemade almond butter and drinking great coffee, and most importantly, taking care of herself and spending time with those that matter. A graduate of Concordia University in Communications Studies, that is where Sharon found her writing voice. Algonquin Colleg?s Advertising program showed her that she could handle any pressure and deadlines, too. Born in Montreal, Sharon presently lives in Toronto with her husband, Gordie, and their three children, Josh, Adam, and Olivia. Sharon is very excited to share her latest book Get Up with our audience! Our Featured Artist this week is songwriter and performer Phil McGovern, who originally hails from Ireland and has made his home in Canada for more than 40 years. His Irish roots are strong in his music, and he has performed for years as a solo artist and in small ensembles. Having composed many songs describing his homeland of County Tyrone in Ireland, he is also deeply inspired by the profound beauty, diversity and wonder of the Canadian landscape and peoples. On this episode of Finding Your Bliss, we meet a spectacular person who became blind before the age of three and overcame so much adversity with her positive and incredible attitude. Ruth Vallis went to the Ontario School for the Blind in Brantford for 2 years, when she was only six years old. When she returned with many skills such as learning how to read Braille, she was the first blind student to be integrated into the public school system in Toronto. Upon graduating from Bloor Collegiate, Ruth went on to London, England to study physiotherapy at the North London School of Physiotherapy for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She graduated in 1984. She was so highly skilled that she got a position at Shelton and Associates Physiotherapy upon her return to Canada and then got an incredible position at Hillcrest Hospital, which became The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute at the University Health Network, (UHN). After retiring in 2015, Ruth wrote a book, a memoir called Love is Blind, which is not only a page-turner, but is beyond inspirational and is a shining example of how you can turn obstacles into stepping stones. On this episode of Finding Your Bliss, Judy Librach is joined by one of the most popular and longest standing hosts ever on the Shopping Channel (TSC). For 23 years, Richard Nester was a welcome fixture in all of our living rooms as a beloved on-air personality. When he made the announcement on the air, that he was leaving TSC, not only was he emotional, but so were all of his colleagues on set that day and everyone watching all over the world. W?ll talk about some of the highlights of his career and what h?s up to now, and he will also sing on the program! Not bad for the Kid who was born and raised in Niagara Falls, and dreamed of being a movie star and made his dreams come true becoming one of the most popular stars on Canadian television for more than two decades. After getting a job as a waiter at the Queen Victoria Park Restaurant, Richard went to Hollywood for two weeks and loved it. He came back, found himself an apartment for only $250 a month, had only one thousand dollars in the bank and then got a job as a waiter at Eaton's Department Store which led to a gig at TVOntario in production and then another lucky break. He became a freelance host at the Shopping Channel, which quickly turned into a position as a full time host; making him the most famous star on the channel and the rest is history. He was able to parlay all of this, beginning with a dream into a dazzling career. A Toronto native, Etha?s love for performance and songwriting began at a very young age. While attending different arts schools, Ethan was performing for sold-out audiences all across Ontario. On this episode of Finding Your Bliss, Judy Librach is joined by dentist Dr. Laurel Linetsky-Fleisher on the program, who is talking all about her passion for dentistry, which she has been practicing for 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Western Ontario and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto. Dr. Laurel then completed a dental internship program at Toronto Western Hospital. Sh?s been practicing dentistry for over a quarter of a century and she is incredibly passionate about her work and her patients. Dr. Linetsky-Fleisher also held a part-time associate-in-dentistry teaching position in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto in the second-year periodontal recall program, where she taught students how to conduct exams for a number of years after graduating. She was the guest dental expert on CBCs The Steven and Chris Show for 4 seasons. She takes numerous continuing education classes and is a long-standing member of the Toronto Crown and Bridge Study Club. Additionally, she holds a leadership position for Alpha Omega Dental Society and she is the president for the 2021-2022 year. She also co-chairs the Venture Sinai program at Sinai Health Foundation which raises funds for much needed research at the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute- LTRI. She was also on the board of Jacob's Ladder, The Canadian Foundation for Control of Neurodegenerative Disease, for 18 years until the charity closed its doors in December of 2019. She chaired the Prep Parents Organization (PPO) for Upper Canada College from Sept 2012-June 2015. She is happily married to Danny and they have 4 sons - Zachary, Brandon, Sammy and Jonah - and a miniature red poodle named Zoey. She spends her downtime, when she can, up north in Muskoka with her family. Her favourite aspect of the job is working with people and helping them to achieve optimal oral health in a friendly, stress free and caring environment. Also on the program, we have Ara Wiseman. Ara Wiseman is a leading nutritional expert, weight loss and anti-aging specialist. For over 20 years, her private practice has been focused on nutrition counselling for anti-aging, hormonal imbalances, disease prevention and management, including type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Ara works at Kinective Health and Performance in Forest Hill Village and at three medical clinics in Toronto. She also teaches nutrition at Transformational Arts College and has written and published three books; Feed Your Body, Feed Your Soul, The Healing Option and A Smoother You. Being in the field of nutrition and health and having seen thousands of clients, students and family members struggle with food, life experiences, illness, and the death of loved ones, she has learned a great deal about the effects of stress on aging. She teaches people how to be proactive in their approach to biological aging, so they can live with vitality and passion. Her motto: It is never too early or too late to slow down the process of aging. Your skin does not have to reveal your age as defined in years! A former guest on our program, Kor?s story is fascinating and it began in Beirut where she was born and Kory's parents moved the family to Toronto when she was eight months old. Her mother, a devoted fan of country music, would continuously play classic country, and Kory found herself singing along. By her teens, she became exposed to hard rock, most notably Guns ? Roses. Having spent several years abroad, it was after her move back to North America and a fateful meeting with her idol and inspiration Axl Rose that the fire to write and perform was reignited. Considering Kory possesses the lyrical vulnerability and glistening vocals of Emmylou Harris, while maintaining the powerful delivery of Ronstadt, it comes as no surprise that alongside Dolly Parton she cites these country queens as her biggest musical influences. In 2017, Kory began writing and recording her first EP, Spellcasting, produced by John Angus MacDonald (The Trews). She released it in 2017, supporting it with a string of shows in Toronto and LA at the legendary Whisky a Go-Go. Her songs received radio airplay across Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, UK, the Middle East, Brazil, and New Zealand. In early 2018, Kory was offered two weeks at the SOCAN house in LA. During this time she began work on a second EP with her current producer Brent Woods (Vince Neil, Sebastian Bach, Taylor Hawkins). It was during this period of musical self-discovery that the album organically headed in the direction of country. At first, Kory was hesitant to make the change in genres, as she wanted to ensure it was coming from a genuine place. As fate would have it, a few months later she would end up seated with Billy Ray Cyrus on a flight to LA. Following a lengthy conversation, Billy Ray was impressed and asked her to send him some of her music. Since 2018 Kory has released 4 singles; An ode to self-love with 'The Secret Garden', the upbeat autobiographical pop-country 'Pretty Little Things', a classic country ballad 'Settle of the Dust', and 'Outlaw' a country-rock tune with a music video featuring members of the rock band Puddle of Mudd. In addition to the music, Kory has been on music conference panels (Niagara Music Week), published articles on?How to Make it in the Music Industry?
