Reid Bervik has a podcast centered around mental health called Recess. Within his podcast he details both his mental health struggle and opens up to the struggles millions are going through daily in fifteen minute short episodes. Mental health is an all encompassing topic within so many people's lives, and Reid is not a stranger to mental health struggles. Through this episode we sit down and talk about this. Reid began his mental health journey at thirteen, he began to have huge amounts of seasonal depression, he felt alone in his struggle. But after ten years he started therapy and felt a huge sense of relief to understand that he was not alone in his struggles and that it was a REAL thing. Reid began to realize through his journey that he could help those around him as well. He outlines the many real things he has learned and experienced. As your own person you can and have the authority over yourself to make decisions that work for you. Asking for what you need and what you want, is extremely important for your mental health. Knowing What You Need: Taking Ownership of Your Mental Health

McKenna Grass is a fourteen year old mental health advocate who is raising awareness for mental health within her community. She is on a mission to make as many people as she can not feel alone, and change the stigma surrounding mental health.  In this episode we discuss the idea of ‘it’s okay to not be okay’ and Mckenna’s journey surrounding mental health. Mental health is a big part of many people’s lives, especially McKenna’s as she details her story about her fathers mental health struggle and how it has impacted her, and even her own journey through mental health as a result. McKenna’s father committed suicide as a result of the tremendous struggle he endured with mental health. McKenna tried hard to get her old self back, when her mental health began to plummet. She now feels like her old self again, with the help of her therapist who works for her and helps her heal. Her and her family have grown together as a result of her fathers tragic death, and have realized that it is okay to have mental health struggles. People have to open up and find those people surrounding them who can help them through their mental health journey. Being open and realizing that mental health is not shameful, is a step toward realizing mental health is just as important as any other health issue. Dr. Nikki Sammet is the founder of Confident Coach Accelerator, Becoming Mama & Beyond, the What Nik Knows Podcast, and is a Transcendental Meditator and a yoga teacher… she does it all!In this episode, Nikki opens up about her journey with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and how the fight to “not be different” caused her to lose hold of her identity. Mackenzie Fannin is a Pre-Med Student from Florida who shares her journey on the road to Med School. In this episode, Paige sits down with Mackenzie who explains the highs and lows of her journey through med school. She discusses how to follow your dreams and become the person you aspire to be, especially as struggles of mental health surface. Mackenzie opens up about her mental health struggles and the challenges she's faced throughout the entirety of her life as she navigates her way to becoming a doctor. She outlines the idea of following one's heart as being the most important thing to do with wherever you want to go within your life. Sobriety is Hard: My Journey to Becoming Sober

Hi fam! Welcome to the season 2 FINALE. What a season it has been, 36 episodes later + I could not be more proud of my team and all they have accomplished. Most importantly, we are incredibly grateful for those of you who choose to listen to It's Hard. I feel like I am truly fulfilling my mission to help people feel less alone in what they are going through, the messages you send + the proof that you listen everyday is what keeps me going each week. This episode was inspired by someone who messaged me and asked to speak on this topic. Honestly, it is a challenging thing for me to talk about and an incredibly vulnerable conversation. However, I know that many people struggle or have struggled with this and sharing stories is how we connect and get through the hard things in life. Have you ever felt as though you lost yourself in a relationship? You and your partner break up and you feel lost + have no clue who you are anymore? You aren't alone. I jumped from relationship to relationship at a young age, I felt as though I knew who I was but in hindsight, I had no clue. This led to me having no idea what I wanted or deserved and allowing behaviors that ultimately caused an intense amount of anxiety + trauma. In this episode, I share my story and how I pulled myself up after being at rock bottom post-breakup. Losing Yourself in a Relationship: How to Find Yourself Post-Breakup

In this episode, Jack puts Paige on the hot seat! They give the inside scoop of what's new in their life and what’s coming up, as well as opening up about vulnerable topics and experiences. The two give relationship advice and reflect on the different ways they process life changes. Paige gets vulnerable about her eating disorder. She discusses the societal pressures in summer to look a certain way in a bikini, the guilt and shame that comes with slacking off workouts and skipping meals. Eating disorders are often an old pattern and a vicious cycle, and she shares the importance of having support from others to hold you accountable and ensure your health is where it needs to be. They also talk about the next steps in their relationship following their move to Arizona, and the challenges and excitement that come with living together. New experiences, different geography, new community... how could it be better? While the excitement is a valid emotion, so are the others. Life Transitions: Moving Across the Country, Overcoming Disordered Eating + The Future of It’s Hard with Jack Holmgren

Jayna Davis was 15 years old when she first came out as a lesbian to those around her. However, her coming out journey never stops. Due to her femme-presenting nature, she is constantly challenged on her identity and has to correct others about her romantic preference. She opens up about what it’s like having to prove herself and her sexuality to others, battling comments like “you don’t look lesbian”, “I have girl friends, too” and “I could change your mind”. She also discusses the shame aspect of going against what is “expected” from a woman who looks like her. Sexism, undermining, and harassment occur regularly and unfortunately probably always will. While we have come far in taking steps towards equality for the queer community, there is so much more work that needs to be done. Jayna emphasizes the importance of asking questions, getting informed, and enforcing change. This can be as simple as permitting queer friends to correct you if/when you make a mistake, allowing them the space to open up, and validating their experiences. Jayna reminds us to own who you are with confidence; that “your dreams, desires, and identities are not defined by the way others see you. As you become more in touch with who you are and what you want in life, you might lose connections with people who don't understand. And that's okay. Being Queer in America: The Beauty + Struggles of Staying True to Yourself

Sam Led is a mindset and transformation coach, author of the book “Fear Less”, powerful speaker, and group facilitator. In this episode, Paige and Sam discuss the stigma of mental health and the impact it has. Mental health is typically associated with illness, that something is wrong with you, or that you are “broken”. In reality, everyone has mental health and you are more than your ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc. We all feel differently, think differently, and face things differently. As soon as our society begins to normalize mental health and talk about it in a positive light, we will be better off. They also discuss thought control and what to do with the negative thoughts that take over your mind in times of discomfort. Sam reminds us that pushing thoughts down and utilizing thought-stopping techniques is actually detrimental. Instead, he encourages us to remember that these bad thoughts will pass and your mind will settle. It’s okay to not be okay at that moment. Adulting is Hard with Done w/ Adulting

At age 13, Miki Speer lost her mother to cancer. Miki pushed this trauma down, claiming “I’m fine” out of fear of standing out when all she wanted to do was fit in. This unprocessed grief lasted a decade until finally, in college, she started experiencing its impact. She began crying at the drop of a hat and her relationships with friends, school, and sports faced negative repercussions. Miki went to a doctor, simply thinking she had a tear duct problem! Instead, she learned her “mystery crying” was years of pent up grief and trauma that hadn't had anywhere to go. She went to counseling and began working through her grief, which inspired the brand she has created today. Through her music, books, and shows, Miki Speer’s mission is to create impactful content that helps people process their grief and teach others how to help grievers.In this episode, Miki explains what you can do to help yourself + others with their loss, explains the phases of grief, discusses “loss-privilege”, resilience, comparison, and more. Grief looks so different for everyone and it is important to remember these three things:Don’t bring it up in public. While sympathy is greatly appreciated, no-one wants to be the one to stand out. This is especially true for kids, as they work so hard to fit in and be normal.Remind the grieving person that their loss matters. Their life is going to change, even when the world spins on as normal. Let them know that it is okay to take a step back and process things and it is okay to be sad. Remember that grief is vulnerable. Opening up is hard; it is emotional, raw, and not something people will be comfortable talking about with everyone. Don’t expect someone to open up right away--just be a safe spot and be there in other aspects of their life. We all have unprocessed grief, whether that is a family death, the loss of significant experiences due to COVID-19, or a friend moving away. It is important to take pressure off of yourself because any loss deserves respect, time, and sympathy. Avoid comparison and don't dismiss grief just because it isn't as extreme as something else. Let yourself heal, no matter how large or small its impact was. Grief is hard. We aren’t taught how to be resilient, it is something you train and strengthen as you go through life. Being a support for yourself and others through tough times is key... Enduring, Processing, and Overcoming Grief with Miki Speer

The Creating Ripples podcast was designed to create empowerment, inspiration, community, and provide guidance to elevate those around us. Alex Zauner believes in the power of showing up and sharing our experiences + knowledge with others to create ripples of impact around us. Blacking out, causing trouble, fighting, getting bad grades, and making decisions she wouldn’t support if she was sober became her normal--something too many people can relate to. After waking up in a hospital and seeing how her drinking habits impact her relationships, she decided to make a change. She enrolled in an outpatient program and has been sober since September, 2014; her 24th birthday. Alcohol is a forefront for social activities and we see it in our lives constantly in phrases like: “Let's go out for drinks!”, “Drinks after work?”, or, “It’s Friday, drink up for the weekend”. Drinking has become the status quo! People don’t react well to the word sober, nor alcoholic. However, sobriety--removing something that isn’t serving you anymore--should be normalized without the negative perception that follows. Being sober has allowed Alex to be her best and truest self and show up for those around her. She is fun, trustworthy, reliable, supportive, kind, and resilient.
