Continuing in our “Back to the Basics” series, we came back to the basics of prayer and discussed what the posture of our hearts ought to be when we commune with God. We were reminded of the reverence we are to have when we pray, recognizing the holiness of God as we bring our requests to Him. We were also reminded to pray with persistence, relentlessly bringing our requests to God and trusting that He will answer. It is for this reason that we must pray with confidence, knowing that God’s will and timing far exceed our expectations. Finally, we are to pray with guidance from the Holy Spirit, allowing the Spirit to lead our prayers so that they would line up with the will of God. Prayer is crucial for the growth of the believer and requires that our hearts are in the right posture as we enter into the throne room of the Holy God.

Back To Prayer

As we began our series entitled “Back to the basics” we began with the topic of Scripture and some practical ways to approach our time in God’s Word. We established the authoritative nature of Scripture being “God breathed” setting the foundation as to why we turn to the Bible. We discussed how we are to come with expectation whenever we approach the Word of God, believing that it is the living word, able to speak to us when we come with eager ears to hear. We were also shown why context is key when it comes to interpreting Scripture, and the necessity of consulting with the full counsel of Scripture as opposed to reading passages in isolation. We were also reminded of the importance of committing Scripture to memory in order to truly meditate on God’s Word. Finally, we were reminded to keep Christ at the center of our devotional times and not placing ourselves at the center of the text. With these practical steps to reading the Bible, the hope is to rekindle passion for Scripture and bring us back to the Bible.

Back To The Bible

How do we resolve the restlessness in our souls? In this standalone sermon, we looked at the root of our restlessness and how to get back on track with our Christian walks. As we saw in Scripture when we have a low regard of God’s Word, it results in pursuing sin and the things of this world. Our sin and disobedience are what ultimately causes us to feel frustrated and restless in our souls. The call then is to come back to the ancient paths, the good path that leads to life. In order to do this, we learned that we must first recognize the ancient paths, coming to see the difference in the way we’ve been going and the way God wants us to go. Once we recognize our circumstance, we are to request for the ancient paths as an active display of our repentance from the way we were going. Finally, we are to rest in the ancient paths as they ultimately lead to Christ. We find rest for our souls when we cease from disobedience and pursue the rest only found in Christ.

The Ancient Paths

The creation story challenges us as Christians in the area of economics to reflect the image of our creator God in His care for the world. The topic of stewardship is often confused with the principle of tithing when in reality it is about exercising our God-given dominion over His creation. Scripture teaches us that stewardship is the economics of how we utilize, care, maintain and protect God’s resources. While we as finite, fragile beings live in a world created and owned by the infinite, marvelous Christ, we are to be honoured that He has indeed tasked us with the great responsibility to steward His resources to the Glory of Himself for our well being. 

From Theft To Stewardship

In this conclusion to our Worldview series, we looked at the world’s idea of social justice and how the Bible calls us to love others. We established the idea that justice in all its forms must start with God; He defines what justice means, and illustrates it in the Gospel. What we see in Scripture is that justice is simply receiving what we deserve without favor, as opposed to the notion of social justice where one receives what they don’t deserve because of favoritism. This demonstrates how social justice shows partiality, as opposed to Biblical justice that is impartial. This is important for believers to understand as justice ultimately illustrates the Gospel; a holy and just God punishing sin, yet in His mercy and grace takes the punishment on to Himself. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is our example of how true justice and love is to be reflected into the world.

The Gospel of Social Justice

The world promotes a gospel of self where man is at the center and God is at the sidelines. And the church of Jesus Christ is not exempt from being tempted and influenced by such a false gospel. In this sermon, we looked at Paul’s doxology in Romans 11:36 to see how we can inform our worldview as Christians. We learned that we must begin, continue and end with God, in all facets of life. As the world continues to pronounce its hostility towards Christian teaching and practice, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of His Spirit, transform our worldview to have God at the center of everything.
