When we spoke, Rosenbloom was fresh from delivering a baby a few minutes earlier via cesarean section and could have been called at any moment to deliver another, so our conversation is concise, fast-paced and informative. It is also based on the curiosity of host Amanda Borschel-Dan as a 45-year-old woman who has just entered her 8th month of pregnancy. She has found very little information online for pregnancy in her age bracket and wanted to set the record straight for others. Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week, ahead of Sunday's observance of Tisha B’Av on Sunday, which commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples, we go onsite in Jerusalem to the Temple Mount Sifting Project. We speak with archaeologist Zachi Dvira, who is the co-director of the project. He’ll explain its controversial genesis and continuing struggle. At the end of our conversation, you'll hear as we wet sift a bucket of earth taken from the Temple Mount. Founded in 2004 near the Mount of Olives, it’s now at a new location called Mitzpe Hamasuot, near the Hebrew University. The new site is easily accessible and has an auditorium and a shady picnic grove, which was made possible with the help of American Friends of Beit Orot. This week we’re speaking with a dynamic young Israeli filmmaker named Dani Schoffman, whose short “Aye Ko” was filmed in Burma after he lived in the fascinating mysterious country for several years following NYU film school. The film follows a 12-year-old Burmese girl as she struggles to bring a blessed goat home to her village for her sister’s wedding. Everything goes wrong and we meet a colorful cast of characters along the way. Schoffman describes his initial culture shock in arriving in Burma, a country that was essentially closed to the world for 60 years, how he found himself giving an offering to Buddha to ward off a curse while filming, and how the Yiddish phrase “Man tracht un gott lacht” — “Man plans and god laughs” couldn’t have been more true. Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week, at the tail end of Pride month, we're speaking with a leader of IGY — the Israel Gay Youth organization -- Rom Ohayon, who heads up all post-high school programs. Today, IGY is funded in part by the Israeli Ministries of Education, Health and Social Welfare, in addition to private donations. There are some 400 IGY volunteers who offer support and advocacy for over 4,000 gay youth a year throughout Israel. IGY works in conjunction with the IDF, the National Service programs, and is launching a new pre-military academy named after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg this fall. But it was not always on the Israeli scene and was only created in 2002 by Yaniv Weizman and Gal Ohovsky, specifically for youth aged 12-23. Its ongoing evolution and spread to all kinds of Israel’s diverse communities means the group is gradually filling a massive void for gay youth and helping them stay integrated within Israeli society. By 2010, IGY started its post-high school Year of Service group. Some participants continue to the IDF’s Nahal Brigade, which was founded by David Ben-Gurion in 1948 and traditionally combines military service with serving in small communities. Since 2018, several graduates of the service and army programs have settled in Afula and become IGY leaders. This is where we find 29-year-old Rom Ohayon today. NYT India correspondent's cautionary tale on 'nightmarish' delta COVID variant

This week, ToI published an article about a fascinating study that pinpoints when and where early modern man met up with their Neanderthal cousins -- 50,000 years ago in the Negev Desert. The multi-disciplinary study was authored by the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Weizmann Institute and draws on hi-tech carbon-14 dating, alongside the discovery of material culture excavated by IAA prehistorian, Dr. Omry Barzilai, at the Boker Tachtit site in the Negev. Barzilai explains his path into the world of prehistoric archaeology and helps put a human face on early man, whom he firmly believes were a lot like us. Even as the State of Israel appears poised to usher in a new era of politics, this week on Times Will Tell we are looking back at the prime minister who, in 1977, caused the original “Mahapach” or “Upheaval” -- Menachem Begin. We’re speaking with director Jonathan Gruber, whose English-language film about Begin, “Upheaval,” opened this week. Gruber paints a complex picture of Begin, a self-proclaimed “simple Jew” from Poland, whose Zionism led him to become one of Israel’s founders and most influential leaders. The film is well worth viewing for the star-studded cast of interviewees and remarkable historical images and footage. Mahapach! Meet the Israeli prime minister who staged the country's 1st political 'Upheaval'

In the wake of Operation Guardian of the Walls, late last week, host Amanda Borschel-Dan had a startling conversation with antisemitism scholar Adi Kantor from the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Tel Aviv. Kantor is a research associate at the Europe Research Program and in the institute’s ongoing project "Contemporary Antisemitism in the United States.” Her main research fields include right-wing extremism, antisemitism, trauma, identity and intergenerational discourse after 1945. Kantor offers a disturbing look at the trend of increasing antisemitism that is sweeping the globe from all political and societal echelons. Antisemitism: Where the far-left and the far-right meet and greet

Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week a crazy interesting study is published in the Tel Aviv archaeological journal called “The Pentateuchal Dietary Proscription against Finless and Scaleless Aquatic Species in Light of Ancient Fish Remains.” It was co-authored by Ariel University’s Dr. Yonatan Adler and Haifa University’s Prof. Omri Lernau; we're speaking with Adler. Finless and scaleless fish are prohibited in the Bible, in both Leviticus and Deuteronomy. It appears in both books just after pig is forbidden from consumption. But it seems it was much less observed throughout the land and ages. In the newly released study, the pair of scholars examine all known evidence of fish remains from ancient Judah over the period of some 2000 years to see if the common everyday Judean was actually following this particular Torah law, and if so, from when. This study is part of Adler’s Origins of Judaism project, which examines all sorts of Torah laws, including purity, figurative art, and dietary prohibitions, and looks for concrete evidence for them. Reality got you down? Escape into 'The Lost Shtetl,' the town that Hitler missed

Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. The holiday of Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks, is here and one of the major themes surrounding this day that marks the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai is conversion. So we’re speaking with Seth Farber, an American-Israeli rabbi and social activist, who is a leading expert in conversion and how it went awry in the Jewish state. Farber was ordained by Yeshiva University and after moving to Israel, he earned a PhD in Jewish History from Hebrew University. In 2002, Farber founded the organization ITIM (“Passages” in Hebrew), which helps up to 5,000 people a year navigate the Israeli Chief Rabbinate in vital life cycle events. According to Farber, Itim works to build a Jewish and democratic Israel in which all Jews can lead full Jewish lives -- including the increasing numbers of Jews who are not recognized as such by the State of Israel. Farber is also a founder of Giyur K’Halacha, Israel’s largest non-governmental, Orthodox conversion program, which we'll hear all about. A proposed cure for conversion perversion in the State of Israel

Hi everyone I’m Amanda Borschel-Dan and welcome to Times Will Tell, a weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week we’re speaking with the Israel Antiquities Authority’s senior researcher Dr. Tali Erickson-Gini about the Nabateans' Incense Road, today a World Heritage Site. We’ll talk about the fall of the Nabatean trade route — possibly due to an epidemic — and other precious commodities in the ancient Holy Land including how globalization influenced antiquity. For over 20 years, Erickson-Gini was the IAA’s Southern Negev sub-district archaeologist and she has conducted numerous archaeological excavations and surveys in many parts of the Negev and even Petra. In 2019, Erickson-Gini excavated in a large area south of Ashkelon's Agamim neighborhood where she discovered evidence of wine and garum production from 2000 years ago. We’ll talk about that, too. Erickson-Gini is also an adjunct lecturer at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. If you ever have a chance to hear her speak, it’s a thrill. In the spirit of coexistence during the holy month of Ramadan, we held a special “Behind the Headlines” online discussion exclusively for The Times of Israel Community (join here). This week on our weekly Times Will Tell podcast, we bring you excerpts of the fascinating dialogue.  In 2019, ToI Editor David Horovitz conducted a fascinating joint interview with Israeli author Yossi Klein Halevi and Palestinian scholar Prof. Mohammed Dajani after the publication of Klein Halevi’s book, “Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor.” In a rare moment of bi-national solidarity, the two neighbors — one a former Jewish Defense League activist now working for Israeli-Palestinian coexistence; the other a former Fatah member whose academic career was destroyed after he took students to Auschwitz in 2014 — agreed to disagree, and vowed to work together as Dajani developed a doctoral program training journalists and religious leaders in reconciliation and interfaith dialogue. Almost two years and an international pandemic later, where do the two neighbors stand now? And what can they tell us that may offer a truly viable model for resolving the broader conflict? Hi everyone, this is Amanda Borschel-Dan and welcome to Times Will Tell, a weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. In honor of this week’s April 20 "4-20 Day" — the day which marijuana enthusiasts have adopted to raise awareness for the causes of cannabis legalization and medical marijuana — we’re speaking with Saul Kaye who is a mover and shaker in Israel’s cannabis legalization and technology drive. Kaye was trained as a conventional pharmacist prior to moving to Israel in the 1990s and establishing a pharmacy in Jerusalem. But around a decade ago, he began opening his mind to the use of medical marijuana when a severely ill friend had exhausted all other options. Now he is the CEO of CannaTech and ICan, two Israel-based initiatives working on medical marijuana efforts. We speak about how the brains and brawn of StartUp Nation are still largely untapped, and so is the some $1 billion potential economic boost that deregulation could provide.
