Every now and then, Jodi is going to break down a term in the book publishing world for you in a mini-episode. Today’s term is subsidiary rights (“sub rights”). Jodi shares that this means parts of your book that can be licensed to someone else and how they profit from it (this includes movie rights, new cover art, excerpts, and maybe even ebooks and audiobooks). If you’re working with a traditional publishing house, they may have a whole department that focuses just on your sub rights , which is a benefit. Jodi explains the cons as well. On this episode of the Write.Publish.Market podcast, Jodi is talking about something that’s becoming more and more popular in the author-entrepreneur world: how to use client stories and interviews (podcasts specifically) in your book. When it comes to sharing a client story or sharing a quote from a podcast the copyright owner of the material is not always clear. There are instances where you’re sharing a client case study or a client's success when you’re maybe not even naming them. So you don’t obtain their permission to use that as an example. But when it comes to putting something in a book, sometimes it gets a little bit dicey here. Episode 4.3: Book Writing and Time Management with Amanda Warfield

Today we’re talking about book backmatter. This is the bookend episode to last week, where we talked about book frontmatter. Just to give you the big-picture view, as we discussed last week, these are the bookends for your book. Your book is basically three sections: the frontmatter, the text itself (the body of the book), and the backmatter. The backmatter is all related to the book, whereas some of the frontmatter can be lifted out without the text/body of the book being affected. That’s not as much the case with backmatter.  When Jodi is talking about backmatter, she is talking about things at the back of the book. That’s how backmatter got its name — not too complex of a concept there. We’re talking about all of those things that follow after the text itself. Your backmatter might include indexes, appendices, endnotes, a bibliography, additional resources for your readers. Now, your book might have some of these. Episode 4.2: Book Backmatter

Today Jodi is talking about your book frontmatter. What that is frontmatter? Frontmatter is pretty commonplace terminology today. And it's basically everything before the main body of the text. A book is structured similarly to the three parts of a story (introduction, body and conclusion). You have the frontmatter, the text, and the backmatter. It's not that the front matter is necessarily setting up the text, although in a way some pieces of it do, but it's really just everything that comes before the text itself — that is, the body of the book. Frontmatter may contain a half-title page, a copyright page, a table of contents, preface, introduction, a foreward. Jodi dives into which of these are necessary and which are more optional.
