Katie Egan is a Brown belt under James "300" Foster in Kent, WA. She started her BJJ journey in 2014 after trying what she thought would be a kickboxing class but really was just shadowboxing and cardio. Before leaving the gym, she noticed the Jiu-Jitsu class and saw people trying to choke each other. Katie came back the next day and was instantly hooked after her first class. Three months after starting, Katie joined her first competition. Almost everyone in her school told her that competing will be great but expect to lose her first competition. After she won her first match, she was dead set on winning the whole comp and did. Katie is a huge advocate for bringing women into BJJ. She runs the "Women Who Roll" blog and constantly speaks of representing all women in the sport. When asked how do we bring more women into BJJ, she says, "by creating a safe environment where women feel welcomed and have the opportunity to grow."  I recently read a Facebook post by another organization using BJJ to help women, and it said something similar to, "If you want to see what your gym culture is like, look how many women are in your class." Katie is doing amazing things for women in Jiu-Jitsu, and it is always inspiring talking to someone so dedicated and driven with their goals and helping others. Elbows Tight Podcast - Women with Cauliflower Ear; Hot?

The guys sit down with Craig Hanaumi, a police officer and purple belt in BJJ. Craig has been a police officer for 15 years and a BJJ practitioner for 12. He got a taste of jiu-jitsu in his home state of Hawaii when he was in his early 20's. Craig's first experience with jiu-jitsu was similar to most of ours, he got stuck in a person's guard for five minutes and had no real idea of what he was supposed to do. After the five minutes, Craig said he felt like it was a victory at first but then quickly realized he didn't really do anything. Also, it didn't help that the person who held him in their guard was a teenage kid. After working at Bellevue Police Department Craig gained notice from the local community for his outreach. He uses his skateboarding and jiu-jitsu background to connect with the community he polices. He takes great pride in showing people that what they see on the news is not the only side of policing. Craig has an infectious personality and really brings a lot of joy to this interview. Travis's Interview with Forever White Belt

Nathan Orchard is a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Eddy Bravo. He started his grappling journey through wrestling for 11 years before transitioning over to MMA. As a professional MMA fighter, Nathan had 21 fights before retiring. For his first 10 pro fights, Nathan had no formal training in martial arts. He said after losing close fights to either better wrestlers or strikers he decided to take his training more seriously and find some coaching. Before recording the podcast Nathan hosted a seminar centered around the basics of leg lock entries. During his instruction, Nathan talks philosophically about positions, movement, and how everything ties back into BJJ. He preaches that movement is movement and the only thing that changes the movement is the application. Nathans journey through BJJ is not like many others and because of that his story is captivating and inspiring to anyone who trains alone or who is insecure about their abilities. His mindset towards being a practitioner of BJJ is; Think Street, Train Sport, and Practice Art. Elbows Tight Podcast: Nathan Orchard - Think Street, Train Sport, Practice Art

Today's interview is with the incredible Roy Dean. Professor Roy Dean is a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, under Professor Roy Harris, and Seibukan Jujutsu, with additional black belts in Kodokan Judo and Aikikai Aikido. He is the author of two books Becoming the Black Belt A BJJ Journey and The Martial Apprentice: A Japanese Jujutsu Adventure, which are both must-reads for any martial artist. Mr. Roy Dean started his martial arts journey as a 16-year-old boy living in Japan as a foreign exchange student. He was told that he needed to pick up a traditional Japanese hobby and decided to pursue Kodokan Judo. From there he fell in love with multiple martial arts. Ultimately he found BJJ in his early 20's and was hooked. Mr. Roy Dean is probably most known for his high-quality video content on his YouTube page and his RoyDean.tv. He looks to be a storyteller with all of his content instead of just being a talking head with technique. His belt demonstration starts off with a beautiful symphony of technical knowledge into rounds of sparing starting with lower belts as the tester slowly works up the ladder of difficulty until they finally reach Mr. Dean himself for their final test before earning their new rank. Even with what fame and acknowledgment he has earned around the world, Mr. Dean is extremely humble and wants to give as much as he can back to the Jiu-Jitsu community as possible. His wealth of knowledge, humility, personality, and content search for improvement flows from him with every question answered. Elbows Tight Podcast: Roy Dean - The Importance of Cross Training

Jon and Travis sit down and talk with Juggernaut Training Systems owner and BJJ Blue Belt Chad Wesley Smith. Chad has been competing in a plethora of sports at a high level since he was in High School.  He has thrown an Olympic standard in the Shot Put, achieved the 9th highest total in powerlifting raw, and became a professional Strongman all while still coaching strength and conditioning for all levels of sports.  Even over a zoom call, the atmosphere was infectious. All three guys seemingly having a small on their faces the whole time. Chad is a big man with a bigger than life personality. His wealth of knowledge just flows out effortlessly as he answers each question with great detail leaving almost no stone unturned. Even with such awe-inspiring answers, Chad mentions that he has a YouTube video for everything that goes into even more detail than offered on this show.  Chad's knowledge did not come to him overnight. It was gained from years of hard work and having an attitude that was hungry for information.
