Many real estate professionals use social media tools like Instagram or Facebook, but you shouldn’t overlook LinkedIn either. LinkedIn lead generation can be a powerful resource for growing your network and your business. The key is to use it correctly! My guest for this week’s episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast is my friend Scott Aaron, an internationally acclaimed and award-winning network marketer, business coach, author and speaker who has mastered the art of using LinkedIn as a powerful marketing tool for professionals of all kinds. LinkedIn Lead Generation Strategies Scott’s secret to creating powerful LinkedIn lead generation is found in his “four layers” approach. These are four key steps you can follow to significantly up your LinkedIn game. Scott describes it like a wedding cake with four tiers. The bottom tier, the base, is your profile itself. Your profile’s elements should be working together to clearly define what you do. Your profile picture should be a professional headshot, and your headline should NOT be a “power statement” but instead should be filled with searchable terms that sum up what you do and who you are. Your “About Me” section should be written in the first person and should conclude with a clearly defined call to action. All the following sections such as your education, volunteer experience and licenses and certifications should be filled in as well. The second layer of your LinkedIn cake is how you build your network. Scott says that you shouldn’t accept every connection request you get but should instead only connect with others if they fall into one of two categories: they should either match your ideal client avatar, or they should be what Scott calls “power partners”, people who operate in the same spaces you do that can make introductions and facilitate connections. Anyone who isn’t an ideal client or a power partner shouldn’t become part of your network. The third layer is your messaging. How you reach out to others has a dramatic impact on how their opinion of you forms. Your messaging should follow Scott’s three-step “magic formula:” Connection request – a personalized, relaxed, conversational introduction Lower the drawbridge – find and clearly state the common points you share with the person you’re messaging, and specifically use the word “support” in this section Call to action – a closing statement that clearly defines what you would like the recipient to do next to further the building of the relationship The final layer of Scott’s LinkedIn lead generation strategy is your content creation. The content you share on LinkedIn should add value to the people you share it with. It should be focused on what Scott calls the PSP, the “passenger-side perspective.” In other words, your content should be tailored around your audience and their needs and expectations. The key is to focus on single tasking vs. multitasking. Multitasking is like channel surfing: you’re flipping from channel to channel but never truly focusing on any of the shows you’re jumping through. When you focus on just one thing at a time, you can be more present, more productive and more energized! The Benefits of Single Tasking vs. Multitasking Here’s a hard truth: multitasking doesn’t really help you get more things done. If anything, allowing yourself to be pulled in too many directions can drain you of your energy. Instead, focus on single tasking. Don’t let your phone or emails distract you. Instead, focus on being present in THIS moment and on the one thing you’re doing right now. Not only does this benefit you in your work, it can be a powerful benefit to all the other aspects of your life as well. Your relationships will be stronger, you’ll feel more focused and energized, and you’ll get more done! There really are so, so many benefits to focusing on one thing at a time, and the people around you will appreciate you for being truly there for them. Avoiding “Channel Surfing” In his book Black Belt of the Mind, Dr. Fred Grosse talks about channel surfing as an analogy for allowing ourselves to be distracted by a million little things. Imagine that all of the different aspects of your life are individual channels on a TV. When you flip back and forth between channels, you aren’t really getting anything from any of them. It’s only when you pick a channel and focus on it that you can really get into the show and follow with what’s going on. That’s exactly what life is like! When you should be focusing on the “Family Channel” and spending time with your family, don’t touch the remote! If you’re watching “Friends”, stop checking your messages and emails. Be present in the moment! A Successful Mindset Needs a Stress-Relief Valve As Erin explained during our conversation, humans evolved a fight-or-flight response for a reason: it’s supposed to help us out in big, dangerous situations. However, in our modern lives we don’t have to fight sabertooth tigers or run from predators, and many of us have become stuck in that “always on” fight-or-flight mode. The problem is, we need periods of rest and calm to “reset” our responses to stressful situations. Our systems were designed to give us a temporary burst of adrenaline but weren’t designed to live in a constant state of go-go-go. Never taking a break from the stress and pressure has all kinds of negative effects on our sleep, our physical and hormonal health, and on our mindset. It’s important to take a period step back and let our systems reset to a calm state to achieve a truly successful mindset! Unlearning Early Lessons One of the other big points Erin brought up in our discussion is how, from a very early age, boys and girls are taught to handle things differently. Little girls are often given the message that “you’re such a great helper” while boys are taught “you can push harder and get better”. These lessons often chase us into adulthood, where women are left to feel that they must always be good at everything and they’re less likely to apply for jobs they believe themselves to be underqualified for. Meanwhile, men have internalized the message that “I can figure this out as I go”. The worst part is, both groups are left with this nagging doubt and a resistance to asking for help for fear of seeming incompetent! But there should never be any shame associated with asking for help when you need it! Let’s face it, we’re always going to be our own worst critics. Learning to ask for help even when it feels uncomfortable to do so is so important. Recognizing your own limits and owning your strengths AND your weaknesses isn’t “admitting failure”, it’s showing that you’re self-aware. And that empowerment can truly unlock a successful mindset that will help you achieve your goals! Doing so requires a lot of guts, tenacity, ambition, drive, and willpower. And, while those are all great qualities to have, they can also cause us to get in our own way. It’s very easy to convince ourselves that we’re the only ones who can do things “the right way,” and so we try to wear every hat ourselves. So what happens? We become the bottleneck to our own success. There are only so many hours in a week, and when we spread ourselves too thin across those precious hours we can find our energy drained and our motivation sapped. In this week’s “solocast” episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, I want to talk to you about the importance of asking others for help, and I want to share with you the transformative power doing so can have on your business…and your life! Identifying Areas Where Others Can Help Do you ever feel anxiety or even dread, when you look at your calendar and see certain tasks coming up? Do you think “Ugh, I really don’t want to have to do that, I’ll put it off until tomorrow?” The activities that make us feel that way are different for everyone, but the end result is the same: the wind gets sucked right out of our sails. These tasks, the ones you know you want to put off or avoid, might be ideal places where asking others for help can make all the difference! Consider what would change in your life if you knew you could give someone else that task and they would execute on it. What would you do with that extra time? Would not having to face the things you don’t like doing give you back some of your precious time and energy? What sort of positive domino effect would not having to do that thing have on your mindset and your life? Asking Others For Help Isn’t About Weakness Really, it’s about prioritizing your time. Asking others for help with the things you don’t love doing can free you to focus on the fun parts, the things you feel the most energized and excited about, and the things that can really move the needle forward for your business. Hiring someone to spend an hour or two each week focusing on the things you feel anxious about has such a positive impact on your energy and your motivation! In it, the authors talk about the neuroscience of mindset and how it can have a dramatic effect on our happiness and success. One key thing you should avoid doing is comparing yourself and your level of success to others. We all have unique strengths and talents that we can tap into to create outstanding results… but your strengths may be different from someone else’s, and so comparing your successes to theirs doesn’t really tell the full story. Leaning Into YOUR Strengths Something we should all do is take the time to reflect on what makes us us. What are you uniquely good at, and how can you leverage those skills and talents? How can you focus your energy on those things, while minimizing the amount of grinding you have to do in areas you aren’t as strong in? There’s an art to prioritizing what really matters. And here’s a really important lesson — sometimes it’s okay to say no! Finding the right focus is critically important for transforming your life and progressing toward your goals. You don’t have to do everything right now, either… you can choose to put that great idea on a shelf and look at it again later when you have the time and energy to pursue it. What can you be doing right now that will move the needle forward? Focus on those things, and you’ll be able to achieve more by doing less!
