Today’s conversation is one we need to have, especially given what’s going on in the world and how it is impacting the mental health of virtually everyone. I want to talk to you about therapy – the importance of it, some of the hurdles around it, and the many benefits it can have for us all. The Value of Therapy

I cannot begin to tell you just how excited I am to bring this week’s guest, Tianna Madison, to you all today. Tianna is a two-time Olympian, specializing in long jump and short sprinting events, with three gold medals and multiple World Championships to her credit, but, as she will tell you herself, her track and field resume is ‘the least interesting thing about her’. 102: Survive and Advance with Tianna Madison

Well, here we are at Episode 101, and as we begin the journey through our next 100 episodes, I want to start with a topic that is a part of all our lives, and which we really need to address. The concept of shame, how it shows up for us, and what we can do about it represent critical components in our mental, physical, and emotional health as well as our ability to achieve the success we deserve. Today, I want to share some important research regarding the storm we know as shame, illustrated with some examples from my own life as well. First off, I have a crucial question I need you all to ask yourselves, and then we’ll look at the definition of shame, the importance of making healthy connections, the concepts of shame and guilt, and we’ll delve into some of Brene Brown’s work in this area. We’ll also examine the difference in shame for men and women, what happens when we experience shame, how to respond deliberately to it, and the theory of shame resilience. To finish up, I’ll walk you through the 4 steps that allow you to acknowledge and move through it all. Shame is an aspect of life which we all face, as the many examples from my own life clearly demonstrate, so it is an area that needs our deliberate attention, and that is exactly what we’ll achieve here today. 100: Celebrating Endurance — Our 100th Episode

After going through the rollercoaster of emotions over the past few months, there is one topic that has arisen for me a number of times, and it’s one that we sorely need to talk about, especially as women – being angry. Too often shackled by society’s attitude toward women and anger, many of us have never actually been taught about this most powerful emotion, how to validate it or express it in a healthy manner. Well, I’m here to tell you, that all changes today. We’ll start off by looking at the importance of actually learning how to be angry, the traditional narrative that works against women in this regard and the impact it has, the reality of internalized misogyny even amongst women, and some findings from a study examining women’s anger. I’ll share with you some beautiful and transformative words from the poet David Whyte regarding anger, explore the concept of productive anger, and then run through some ways we can all use the information shared here today including how to validate and express anger in a healthy way and how to become comfortable with it. Whether it’s from my conversations with clients or my own daily experiences, I am constantly reminded of the importance of curiosity in such essential components of our lives as problem solving, communication, relationships and working towards goals. 98: Pushing Past the Status Quo with Curiosity

Almost all of us have found ourselves making unhealthy or unproductive decisions at one point or another, especially over the course of the pandemic. But why do we make these poor choices even when we know better? Today I’ll look at some of the biggest factors that impact our ability to make decisions that serve us well, and five powerful ways that you can organize and simplify your life to avoid decision fatigue - the mental and emotional state of depletion resulting from a burden of choices. We start our days with hundreds of little decisions that take up mental energy - What should I wear? What am I going to have for breakfast? Do I have time to make coffee? As the day goes on, these tiny choices add up and we get so tired and overwhelmed that we’re just done with making decisions by dinnertime. This is when we fall victim to decision fatigue, which causes us to make poor decisions. We defer important choices to someone else or choose not to make any at all. On this episode, I break down several examples of how decision fatigue can affect us, how this differs from lack of willpower, and I dig into five practical ways that you can avoid decision fatigue and make better choices as a result. You’ll hear why making decisions can be so paralyzing when we have too many options, how even the most mundane choices can drain our mental energy, why sitting back and hoping we make the right decision never works, and most importantly, what you can do about it right now. It's because we're just inundated with all these choices.” “Think about Netflix - I mean, I don't watch TV because I get too overwhelmed with the options.” “There are a lot of decisions that drain our energy that we literally experience over and over again. And this is wasting a lot of our energy because they can be planned for.” “If we make these [decisions] ahead of time, then it's so much easier to have these on autopilot almost. And then when we get thrown all these other decisions that we didn't plan for, we don't feel as exhausted.” “When grocery shoppers were offered six different flavors of jam, 30% of shoppers purchased a jar of jam. 97: Five Powerful Ways to Conquer Decision Fatigue

What exactly does quitting mean to you? This is a question I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, especially in terms of how quitting is different from giving up. Everyone knows that I simply will not settle, but I can tell you that I do, and I have, quit things in the past, but I don’t give up. There’s a huge difference between the two, and that’s precisely what I want to talk to you about today. I’ll begin by explaining the ‘sunk cost fallacy’ as well as the difference between quitting and giving up. We’ll then walk through some examples from my own life where I have chosen to quit, look at more general examples of quitting such aspects of life as relationships, jobs, and goals, and review the need to exhaust all other options in these situations. The notion of feeling judged by others for quitting is also discussed, and I’ll finish up with some essential questions to ask yourself when considering quitting. It's like we call it off before we've exhausted all options, and then regret it after we've done it.” “Quitting, on the other hand, is the decision that something isn't worth continuing.” “And I feel like in our society, there's a lot of pressure, there are a lot of narratives around why you should not quit a relationship, why you should stick it out, why you should not walk away, not, you know, all of these things.” “It's not giving up, it's ending something that is not good for you, that has no value, that isn't worth it to you.” “There have been many times where I wanted to quit my business. And instead of quitting the business, I've looked at things I need to rework and change and ways I need to pivot so that it makes more sense to me.” “As a society, we are conditioned to think quitting is failing, and I'd argue it's almost the opposite.” “It's your life. It's your time. It's your energy. And we have one life. And the way we spend it is really important.” “It's one of the most challenging decisions we can make as humans.” “You can't compare your journey to somebody else's, right? 96: Are You a Quitter?

Today’s topic is one that I’m really looking forward to bringing to you, and it’s one that I really want you to think about: incorporating habits that allow you to have rest and recovery. As ‘doers’, so many of us tend to pile stuff on ourselves, and we freak out a bit at the thought of taking the time to rest, but I guarantee you, it is extremely important not only to your performance, but your immune system, your relationships, your enthusiasm, and your mental health as well. We’ll begin by looking at the need for rest and recovery, differentiating between sleep and rest, and the addiction that so many of us have to the busy-ness of our lives. I’ll also review the three main areas in our lives which require rest and recovery, their causes and symptoms, and I’ll share a number of practical strategies to help address exhaustion in these areas. Easily one of the most talked about stories coming out of the current Olympic Games is Simone Biles’ decision to pull out of some events for mental health reasons. Her actions have generated a vast amount of opinions representing many different views, and I find that there is so much involved with both her decision and the reaction to it that we can learn from and apply to our own lives. 93: What We Can Learn from Simone Biles

92: What’s Your Definition of Success?

What motivates you? How can you feel more fulfilled? Why is change sometimes so hard? These are some of the big questions that we are going to dive into here today. As a certified Enneagram Coach, my work with clients always involves the use of this fantastic assessment tool which not only reveals how we behave, but more importantly, why we behave the way we do. It also leads us to identify our blind spots, triggers, and defense mechanisms, as well as how to confront them, and that’s what I want to share with you here today. We’ll start by looking at how we protect our idealized self-image, the blind spots and defenses that are involved, and what exactly the Enneagram is and what it reveals about us. I’ll also use a number of examples to demonstrate the blind spots, triggers, and defense mechanisms associated with each Enneagram type and offer some ways to confront them as well. We’ll finish up by exploring what exactly you can do with this valuable information, including implementing the ‘lengthen the pause’ strategy. 91: Opening Our Eyes to Our Blind Spots

If there is one thing that we all indisputably have in common, it’s that we are all aging. What we may not have in common is our attitude toward this universal fact, and whether we find it limiting, empowering, or somewhere in between. Having recently turned 41 myself, this topic has been on my mind, and so, fully aware that we are all at different stages in this aging process, today I want to address it head on by sharing my own experience, research, and especially my belief that it’s never too late to pursue your goals and be who you want to be. To start I’ll share some of the feedback I received regarding my post about feeling uncomfortable turning 41, the reality of getting older and what makes it complicated, and the physical and mental changes that occur with aging. We’ll also look at the anti-aging industry, some research that I have found and my response to it, some of the positives to be found in getting older, and, most importantly, what we can all do to make this process more enjoyable and to keep moving forward. 90: How to Embrace Aging and Keep Moving Forward

I am so happy to share my good friend, Shannon Elhart with you all today. Shannon and I first met in a Mastermind around six years ago and we’ve kept in touch and supported each other over the years as we both experienced a lot of evolution in our businesses as well as our lives. Starting out as a teacher of severely emotionally impaired middle school students, Shannon went on to get a master's degree in counselor education and psychology which allowed her to become a counselor for children, and then went back to school to get additional certifications to work with adults as well.
