Here's an inspiring story of someone who knows how to deal with tough times. Marc Reklau is a bestselling author of 30 Days - Change your habits, change your life. He lived on welfare while writing his first book and knows how to get through the darkest periods. Here are his lessons learned that will inspire you to stay strong in tough times. Dealing with tough times as a teenager One of Marc Reklau's most difficult periods was from 14 to 16 years. First, he had problems with his father. And then his parents divorced and his father died. Those were tough times but dealing with them shaped him as a person. 30 years later, Marc says he's grateful for that period because it made him the person he is today. Jobless after college When Marc graduated from university in 2002, there was a huge crisis in his home country, Germany. And he was jobless right out of college. That was quite unexpected because his university was so great. Everyone used to graduate from it with a job contract. And suddenly, most graduates were jobless. Those were difficult times when his friends pitied him. But this experience turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Marc decided to look for a job in Barcelona, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. After 9 months, he got a job there. Suddenly, he was working in one of the greatest cities with a beach and a perfect climate. And now his friends went from to pitying to envying him. Jobless again in 2013 In 2013, Marc got fired after working 11 years for his company. He felt down but at that point, he already knew how to use reframing in tough times. So, he took his negative self-talk such as: I'm jobless, I'm jobless, I'm jobless And he turned negative into positive: Not having a job gives me time to think about what I want to do in life. This helped him look at the situation from a different perspective. To deal with these tough times, he set goals and created an action plan to accomplish them. From hopeless to breakthrough One of his goals was to write a book. That's how he created his future bestseller 30 Days. But after he had published it in August 2014, nothing happened for a long time. In the meantime, he was living on his savings and jobless welfare of $850. Finally, in March 2015, his breakthrough came. He got a promotion on Amazon. The book reached 40,000 downloads in a couple of days. One of my best reframing examples is how I reframed fatigue as a way to build resilience. Last year, I overexercised myself and felt fatigued. Even trivial tasks such as climbing the stairs became difficult. But I kept telling this to myself: I'm strengthening patience and all these challenges will seem easier when my fatigue goes away. This reframing helped me change how I felt. Here's how you can use reframing to love your challenges instead of hating them. Neuro-associative conditioning Before we get started, let's look at the theory behind reframing. Reframing is part of neuro-associative conditioning (NAC). It's a critical tool for managing our behavior and how we feel. The creator of NAC Tony Robbins said: When we take control of NAC, we take control of our lives. NAC relies on associating pain and pleasure with what we want and don't want, respectively. More specifically, reframing is replacing negative beliefs with positive ones by: Linking pleasure to new, positive beliefs. Linking pain to old, negative beliefs. With this tool, we can replace any beliefs that don't serve us anymore. Reframing Examples for 2020 - How to Reframe ANY Challenge Positively | Ep. #32

First, understand why you yell. You want to feel significant, or respected. Yelling gives you that because it makes the other person pay attention to you immediately. So why not get that feeling of significance in a more positive way. If you yell at your spouse to feel heard, how about engaging them in a deep conversation instead? One that will lead to both you being 100% heard out. Second, think of your emotional bank account. I love this metaphor by Stephen Covey. You have this bank account with all people in your circle. Whenever you do something positive for them, you make a deposit. When you do something negative, including yelling, you make a withdrawal. If you yell too much, you’ll deplete the account quickly. This often means irreparable damage to the relationship. Third, think about how unproductive yelling is. Instead of resolving a problem, yelling only exacerbates it. You focus not on the problem but on what’s wrong with the other person. You remember your resentments from the past, triggering a negative state where problem solving is impossible. Fourth, yelling causes stress. By yelling, you make your loved ones suffer. You hurt them, often hurting them in a way they’ll never forget. And what’s worse, this stress creates a pathway for disease in their bodies. According to CDC, 90% of all disease is stress-induced. Dig this: yelling equals stress and stress equals disease. That said, use the pain and pleasure principle to stop yelling. Think of ways to punish yourself for yelling. For example, you might bake a cake and deliver it to a food shelter, even it means staying up for three hours into the night. And also think of ways to reward yourself for not yelling. For example, buy something that you always wanted. By doing this, you’ll rewire how you feel about yelling. How Do I Stop Yelling – The Definitive Guide | Ep. #31

I  worked hard in my first business. But I never knew how to work smart, not hard. I did well financially but still, I didn’t work smart enough. Today, I’ll explain how to increase output without breaking your back. My story of working hard In 2005, I created my first business: a Russian translation agency. I would wake up early, walk the dog, kiss my wife and son, and go to work at 5 am. And I would return around 9 pm. When I had urgent translation projects, I would sit translating for 18 hours straight. No rest. Just quick unhealthy snacks. On average, I worked about 90 hours per week for about 14 years. With this hard work came two results. Result 1 I felt happy, probably at a level 8 out of 10. I loved what I was doing because I’m passionate about languages and translation. And as a workaholic, hard work made me happy. Result 2 I built a solid business employing several people. And I was doing pretty well financially. Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote: “I’m a great believer in hard work, grinding it out, and not stopping till it’s done.” Realization 1: I worked hard but not smart enough Yet, here comes the big “BUT.” I worked hard all right, but did I work smart? Say, I had a press release to translate. And at the same time, I had to work on participating in an upcoming translation conference. And I would always choose to translate the press release, even though I could delegate it to a colleague. As a result, I was missing out on opportunities for marketing and growing my business that the conference presented. A life coach Pam Blanchard said: “Working hard has little importance unless there’s value in the work that you’re doing. Anything we do hard in our life should fuel us, not deplete us.” Realization 2: “Get rich quick” mindset Still, there is a second big “BUT” on top of the first one. Yes, I should’ve worked smarter. BUT it doesn’t mean that I should’ve not worked hard. People tend to misinterpret this principle. They believe smart work is more important than hard work. They see other people get rich quickly and it looks like a result of smart work alone. Like writing a hit song. But what they don’t see is years of hard work that came before writing that one song. How to work smart, not just hard Hoping to succeed by working smart and avoiding hard work is a bad idea. It devalues hard work. But working hard without thinking is just as bad. See, they are both important. And we need to hit the sweet spot. To do so, we can discuss our strategy with a devil’s advocate—as a sanity check: a parent a friend a mentor a coach an accountability partner   In my example, they would’ve told me to invest hard work into growing the business. That’s how I could’ve gone from 8 points to 10 points on the happiness scale. Actionable tips My first tip is to work smart, not just hard: have the right strategy for your business. How to Work Smart, Not Hard - 2 Tips to Help You Increase Income | Ep. #30

I will never be happy. If that’s your mantra, you need to meet Mr. Butler. He’s a character in a novel Martin Eden by Jack London. He ended up realizing, “I sacrificed everything for money and now I will never be happy.” Today, I’m going to break down his mistakes to help you become happier. Butler’s story Charles Butler went to work at a young age. He worked in the daytime and studied at night.  He began as an office boy at a law firm and quickly progressed to a clerk and then junior partner. He was ambitious. Butler denied himself any enjoyment in life and saved money. Soon, he was rich. He reached his goal but was he happy? Mistake 1: He sacrificed happiness for his goal “Layin' up money, workin' all day an' studyin' all night, just workin' an' never playin', never havin' a good time, an' never learnin' how to have a good time--of course his thirty thousand came along too late.” Butler wired himself to be happy only when he got his goal. And in the process of getting there, he lost something important: his ability to enjoy life. “An' I bet that he's solemn an' serious as an old owl, an' doesn't care a rap for a good time, for all his thirty thousand a year.” He thought money would make him happy and felt jealous of rich people. But then he got rich and felt jealous of happy people. “An' I'll bet he's not particularly joyful at seein' others have a good time.” Mistake 2: He focused on making money “He could not find an adequate motive in Butler's life of pinching and privation. Had he done it for love of a woman, or for attainment of beauty, Martin would have understood.” Butler made a false assumption that money would make him happy. And he failed miserably. Money does provide comfort but not necessarily happiness. He should’ve focused on being happy rather than making money. Focusing on doing what he loved and service to other people. Then he would’ve been happy. And he would’ve also made money because he would’ve been naturally good at doing what he loved. Mistake 3: He ruined his health Butler’s dyspepsia is a perfect metaphor for how we already have what we need to be happy. He had his health and ability to enjoy life but thought that wasn’t enough. And when he got rich, he couldn’t enjoy it because of dyspepsia. At that point, he realized that he should’ve been happy when he still had had his health. Mistake 4: He was stingy Butler was too economical. And he pushed himself into a scarcity mindset. He held onto his money even when he became rich. What’s the point of being rich if he wired himself not to be able to spend it? Mistake 5: He missed his golden years “Why, thirty thousand, lump sum, wouldn't buy for him right now what ten cents he was layin' up would have bought him, when he was a kid, in the way of candy an' peanuts.” Kids can be 100% present in the now wherein lies our happiness. Butler didn’t make use of those golden years. He never learned to be playful in life. He taught himself to be serious. And that’s a state that makes it hard to be happy. One actionable tip "I feel sorry for Butler. He was too young to know better, but he robbed himself of life for the sake of thirty thousand a year that's clean wasted upon him.” Don’t be Mr. Butler so that you end up saying, “I will never be happy.” Be Martin Eden. He pursued his passion and loved passionately. He had fun all the time. He enjoyed his money by spending it and giving away happily. A life coach Tomas Svitorka said: “20s should be years of experimenting and exploring what you love and what you want in life. As soon as you find it, buckle down and pursue it with all you have. With that said, don’t miss out on life entirely. There are things you won’t be able to do later. How to Make Him Obsess over You - Do This 1 Thing for FAST Results | Ep. #28

I destroyed my marriage when I was 31. I thought living alone would make me happier. But I found I was wrong. Here are lessons learned to show you how to prevent divorce. Reason 1: The problem is usually me My divorce story When I got a divorce, we had been together with my wife for 11 years. We were financially stable. We had a great son and she was a good mother. We had had a lot of great experiences together. And still, I felt miserable because I wasn’t getting enough out of the relationship. For example, I wanted us to grow together but she didn’t care about personal development as I did. Unjustified perfectionism When it comes to our spouses, we are perfectionists and expect them not to have any flaws. How realistic is that? It’s like they are a huge beautiful world but we choose to focus on one piece of dirt and miss all the beauty that’s out there. There’s always going to be something not to like about our spouse. It was my problem really Stephen Covey famously said: “If you think that the problem is out there, that very thought is the problem.” The real problem was my scarcity mindset. I took what was good about my wife for granted and focused on one thing I didn’t like. Unconditional love Instead of blaming my wife for making me unhappy, I should’ve changed myself. Jim Rohn said it best: “For things to change, you have to change.” I needed to accept her as she was. That’s how you stop fighting over your  “problems.” If you get a divorce, you will carry the problem—which is really yourself—right into the next relationship. And it will likely blow up just like this one. Reason 2: Sunk costs See, after 11 years together, there were a lot of sunk costs. Even if it wasn’t perfect, our family was a system that took time and energy to build. And destroying that system meant all that would go to waste. How will our son feel? That’s a huge trauma to our son’s that can lead to developing mental issues. How do I find a new partner? I thought it would be easy to find someone better than my wife. But that’s not the case. Now that I’m older, I’m picky. And I don’t meet enough new people which means fewer opportunities to meet a partner. The next question is finances. We had a small financial system running smoothly. And suddenly, we had to break it, split everything between the two of us, and create our separate systems. Reason 3: I wasn’t better off alone as I had thought I’d be That’s what I had expected from my divorce but I realized I was wrong. It felt okay to be alone and self-sufficient but I wasn’t living up to my full potential. We all have a fundamental need for love and connection. Tony Robbins said: “When you get to the top of the success mountain by yourself, you might want to jump off.” I love my experiences but sharing them with an intimate partner magnifies them. My spouse was the perfect person for that. We were a unit: we had our son to take care of, we lived together and shared everything, we had common goals. We also had many memories. Nurturing this kind of bond makes a difference in the quality of our life. One actionable tip If you want to save your marriage, do marriage counseling with a coach who will fight for your marriage. If that’s not an option for you, here is something you can do on your own. Create a list of things that you like about your spouse. Focus on these positive things all the time, especially when you have a negative thought about him or her. For example, I’d have focused on how responsible and organized my ex-wife was. We used to run a business together and she was one of the best managers that I’ve ever known.
